2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

In an all-Brazilian match-up, Maria Antonelli and Carolina Solberg came out on top of Elize Maia and Taiana Lima 2-0, (21-9, 21-19). The win sends Maria/Carol to the quarterfinals while Maia/Lima are eliminated from the tournament in 9th place.

Solberg was very consistent on her serve, producing four aces. Her and Antonelli focused their serves at Maia who had five serve receive errors. On the attack, Solberg and Antonelli found their success by mixing up their shots, going line and cross. Antonelli took the brunt of the attacks for the team, finding the line shot as well and hard cross shot to the sand.

For the losers, they mixed up their shots around the court, hitting the back line to trip up Antonelli/Solberg.

The first set was a strong and dominant performance from Antonelli/Solberg but Maia/Lima made an attempt at a comeback in the second set.

“We didn’t play at all in the first set. We also started the second set in bad shape, but we improved slowly and in the end, it was close,” said Lima.

Up next for Maria/Carol, they will take on the top seeded team and fellow countrywomen Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca in the quarterfinals.
