At the end of Day 7, the VNL men’s top five are Brazil, Poland, France, Canada and the United States, with the teams divided by just four points.
Stephen Maar and Jason Derocco led the way as Canada edged past Australia in an all-around effort to please the home crowd in Ottawa.
After upsetting World No. 3 Poland to wrap up Week 2 of the VNL, the Germans rode that confidence to a surprise sweep of the second ranked United States on Friday.
As Week 3 approaches, the United States is one of three 5-1 teams atop the VNL standings. Canada is right behind at 4-2. The teams will meet on Sunday in a rematch of the 2017 World League bronze medal match.
Day 6 of the Volleyball Nations League brought some surprising results, but in the end, the top three teams – Poland, the United States and Brazil – moved to 5-1 although Brazil surged ahead of the USA in the standings with a five-set win.
Serbia moved its third straight five-set match in as many days, holding on for the victory over Australia behind Dusan Petkovic. Meanwhile, Egor Kliuka and Dmitriy Muserskiy proved too much for Bulgaria to handle as the team fell to Russia in a sweep.
At the end of the day, Poland and the United States moved to 5-0 atop the standings with the Poles boasting the maximum 15 points to the USA’s 13. Brazil, France and Italy round out the top five at 4-1.
Drazen Luburic racked up 29 points, including 28 kills, and Serbia capitalized on 32 Russian miscues for its second straight five-set win. Australia broke into the win column, scoring a slight upset over 14th-ranked Bulgaria, winning via sweep of the home team on Saturday.
Russia took advantage of 36 Australian errors and boasted an 11-4 lead in blocks in a four-set win on Friday. Forty Bulgarian errors helped fuel Serbia in a five-set comeback victory.
Yuji Nishida downed 18 kills, part of a team-best 21 point effort, to lead five double-digit scorers in a 3-1 win for Japan and regional foe Iran, while Stephen Boyer crushed 16 kills and led all scorers with 18 points as France overpowered Australia in a Sunday sweep.
