USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships

Two teams are one step closer to a berth in the 2018 World University Championships as pool play for the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships wrapped up on Thursday.
The women’s field dropped from 32 to 24 after pool play. Eight teams earned byes until the second round of the playoffs.

Luke/Horton played through a three-setter against South Carolina’s Julia Mannisto/Carly Schnieder and a straight set win over Pepperdine’s Madalyn Roh/Brook Bauer to take Pool C. Mirkovic/Inman dropped their opening set of the tournament to Carly Scarbrough/Brittany Pelliteri (Florida Atlantic), but won four straight to top Pool E. The six remaining pool winners won both of their matches in straight sets to earn the bye.
Of the initial seedings, only three of the top 10 teams won their pool titles: Freire/Paranagua (No. 2), Turner/Towne (No. 7) and Knudsen/Bible (No. 9).

- McHugh/Mertz (Tulane) vs. Jessica Wooten/Aeriel Horton (Houston Baptist)
- Madalyn Roh/Brook Bauer (Pepperdine) vs. Amelia Smith/Sunny Villapando (Stanford)
- Jessica Gaffney/Iya Lindahl (Cal) vs. Jordan Anderson/Kimmy Gardiner (Washington)
- Cadie Bates/Katie Smith (South Carolina) vs. Savannah Slattery/Madelon Leiphardt (Loyola Marymount)
Playoff matches are set to begin at noon ET with the second round slated for 3 p.m. ET and scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. The women’s semifinals and podium matches will be played Saturday.
After six matches on the men’s side, six teams remain with No. 5 seed Robert Mullahey/Owen Yoshimoto of Pepperdine and No. 4 seed Brett Rosenmeier/Colton Cowell of Hawaii earning byes in the playoff bracket. Rosenmeier/Cowell are familiar faces at the Collegiate Beach Championships, finishing fourth in 2017.
Also advancing were Grant Friedman/Dante Chakravorti (UC Irvine), Jon Justice/Adam Wienckowski (Florida State), Will Bantle/Matt McLaren (Penn State) and Collin Merk/Anthony Winter (Quincy).
Bantle/McLaren will face Merk/Winter at 2 p.m. ET Friday, while Friedman/Chakravorti will take the sand at Justice/Wienckowski at 5 p.m. The winner of match 1 will face Rosenwmeier/Cowell at 5 p.m., while the winner of match 2 will take on Mullahey/Yoshimoto at 8 p.m.
The men’s podium matches will be played on Saturday with the third place match set for noon, while the title match will be played at 2:20 p.m.
