NORMAN, Okla. – No. 5 Texas racked up 16 blocks, nine by senior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu, to move past Oklahoma in four sets in the Red River Showdown.

The Longhorns bested the Sooners .287 to .153 in hitting percentage, 59-49 in kills, 5-3 in aces and 16-6 in blocks. Oklahoma edged out Texas 60-58 in digs.

Freshman outside hitter Lexi Sun downed a match-high 19 kills, followed by Ogbogu (11), sophomore outside Micaya White (11) and senior outside Ebony Nwanebu (9). Behind Ogbogu’s match-leading nine stuffs were junior middle Morgan Johnson (6) and White, Nwanebu and freshman setter Ashley Shook with four apiece. In the backcourt, senior libero Cat McCoy led the way with 21 digs, followed by Shook and Sun with eight apiece.

Junior outside hitters Madison Drescher and Alyssa Enneking paced the Sooners with 17 and 15 kills respectively. Junior setter Morgan Miller was next on the team with seven putaways. Drescher also put up at a team-best four blocks, while freshman middle Paige Anderson and redshirt junior middle Leslie Atherton added three stuffs apiece. Enneking rounded out a double-double with a team-high 23 digs, while Miller (13) and redshirt junior libero Rachel Manriquez (11) followed.

Oklahoma hit at a steady .406 clip in the opening set, with help from nine Drescher putaways. Neither team led by more than two leading up to a knot-up at 15-all. Two Texas miscues and an Atherton kill gave the Sooners an 18-15 advantage. The Longhorns rallied with five of the next seven points to go up 21-20 on a White putaway. Oklahoma tied it up at 21, 22 and 23 and Texas earned the first set point try at 24-23 after a Sun kill. A Drescher kill thwarted that attempt and an Enneking putaway gave OU a chance of its own. A hitting error stole away the 26-24 win for the Sooners.

The Longhorns had their best offensive set with a .500 hitting effort and just one error in Set 2. Texas cruised to a 12-5 advantage as Sun downed five kills and OU committed four errors. The teams traded points over the next six serves, but Texas pushed its lead to 20-10 and later 24-11 with help from kills by six different players. A block and a kill by Nwanebu put the Longhorns on the hill at 24-11. The senior added another putaway three points later to close out the 25-13 win.

The teams tied seven times in the first 20 points of Set 3, leading to a 10-all score. Texas broke away with a 5-1 run including two Johnson kill and two OU errors. Two Enneking putaways helped pull Oklahoma within one at 16-15, but that just sparked a 8-1 Longhorn rally. Ogbogu notched four blocks and two kills as Texas jumped ahead 24-16. A service error and Drescher kill thwarted two set-point tries, but Sun gave the Longhorns a 2-1 lead in the match by capping the 25-18 victory.

Nine ties dotted the first half of the set, with the last coming at 14. Oklahoma boasted the largest lead at 10-7 only to see it erased by a 7-3 run. A hitting error tied it up at 14, but the Longhorns scored five of the next seven, two on Sun putaways and two on Nwanebu blocks, to go ahead 20-16. A kill and a block by White gave Texas its first match-point try at 24-19. The Sooners scored three in a row, including an ace by Miller, to keep the match going. Ogbogu pounded down her 11th kill to give the Longhorns the coveted Red River Shootout win.

Freshman Lexi Sun posted 19 kills to lead No. 3 Texas Volleyball (16-2, 8-0) past Oklahoma (5-16, 2-6), 3-1 (24-26, 25-13, 25-18, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at McCasland Field House.

Sun led the Longhorns with 19 kills (.333), while adding eight digs and two blocks.

Two additional Texas players finished with double-digit kills, including senior Chiaka Ogbogu and sophomore Micaya White, who both finished with 11.

Ogbogu’s 11 kills came on 19 swings and only two errors for a .474 efficiency, also finishing with a team-high nine blocks. White added seven digs, four blocks and two aces.

Junior Morgan Johnson recorded six blocks, while senior Ebony Nwanebu added four along with with nine kills.

Freshmen Ashley Shook led Texas in assists with 46, also contributing eight digs, four kills and four blocks.

Senior Cat McCoy posted a team-high 21 digs for her fourth match this season with 20+ digs.

Texas recorded a season-high 16.0 blocks, holding the Sooners to a 6.0 mark.

After falling behind early in the opening frame, Texas tied the score at 9-9 and moved ahead at 10-9 on consecutive blocks with Ogbogu. The Longhorns managed to edge ahead at 21-20 with a White kill after tying six more times, but conceded an 0-1 set lead after the Sooners battled back to take five of the next seven points.

Opening the second set, Texas responded with a higher tempo of play to jump out ahead on the scoreboard. A 7-3 lead belonged to the Longhorns with a kill from Sun, with her tenth kill making it 20-10. Outhitting Oklahoma .406 to .269, an 11-5 run gave Texas the set and tied the score at one apiece.

It was 10-10 in the third set before a 5-1 run from the Longhorns established an advantage. Oklahoma came back within one at 17-16, but Texas rolled to a 2-1 set score at 25-18 behind an 11.0-3.0 blocking advantage.

The Longhorns secured then a 3-1 victory by taking the fourth set 25-22. With five match points at 24-19, Oklahoma saved three before a Texas timeout gave pause at 24-22. But Texas needed only one point after the break, with a kill for Ogbogu from Shook securing win.

Texas will return to Gregory Gym on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Longhorns take on West Virginia at 7 p.m. on Longhorn Network.

The University of Oklahoma volleyball team lost to No. 3 Texas, 3-1, in front of 1,210 at McCasland Field House on Sunday afternoon. The Sooners won the first set behind nine kills from junior outside hitter Madison Drescher(Southlake, Texas), 26-24, before the Longhorns rallied to win the next three.

Drescher tallied 10 kills on her first 10 swings of the day as she finished with a team-high 17. Texas outside hitter Lexi Sun notched a match-leading 19 kills on a .333 attack rate.

“We are doing some great things together and passing the ball pretty well,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “I thought that we made a few too many errors in the second and third set, but we did a great job coming back and fighting in the fourth.”

The Sooners (5-16, 2-6 Big 12) hit .406 in the first to UT’s .312. For the match, Texas outhit OU, .287-.153.

After the first set, the Longhorns (16-2, 8-0) evened the match with a 25-13 win in the second. Texas pulled away with a 25-18 win in the third and a narrow 25-22 fourth to clinch the match.

For the match, the Longhorns totaled 16 blocks to just six for the Sooners. Chiaka Ogbogu led all players with nine as five Texas players notched four or more. Drescher totaled a team-high four blocks for Oklahoma.

Micaya White and Ogbodu contributed to the Texas attack with 11 kills each. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking (League City, Texas) was the second Sooner in double figures as she notched her team-leading 11th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 23 digs, which led all players.

Texas setter Ashley Shook dished out 46 assists and picked up eight digs and four blocks. Oklahoma junior setter Audrey Alford (Norman, Okla.)collected 35 assists and eight digs. Libero Cat McCoy led the Longhorns with 21 digs.

The Sooners return to action Wednesday, October 25 at Kansas at 6:30 p.m.
