Philippine fans are among the most passionate volleyball fans in the world. It’s no surprise then that when one of the country’s favorite players is ruled out of the season under “mysterious” circumstances, it leaves much room for speculation on social media. Sometimes things can go too far, though.

University of Santo Tomas’ outside hitter star EJ Laure was recently ruled out of her college season due to a shoulder injury. Not content with the explanation given by the team, fans took to various social media platforms to question the veracity of the information, and speculations flourished. Rumors of pregnancy and failing grades are just some of the wild theories put forth by fans.

This led to Laure’s coach, Kungfu Reyes, to come out to publicly defend his player, according to Spin.ph. He confirmed that it was indeed a shoulder injury that is keeping Laure from playing, and asked fans to always verify what they read on the internet. He also said that all unfounded rumors will be squashed once EJ starts showing up at the games to watch the team play.

Laure is a former UAAP Freshman of the year and has always been among one of her conference’s top scorers. She was also a part of the Philippine youth team that participated at the 2015 Asian Women’s U23 Volleyball Championship. Professionally, Laure made her debut for the Foton Tornadoes in the E2016 PSL All-Filipino Conference where her team ended as a runner-up and claimed the back-to-back Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix Conference title the same year.
