As a big blow for the Philippine Women’s national team, it has been announced by Spin.ph that Jovelyn Gonzaga will miss the 2018 AVC Challenge Cup and Asian Games, to be held in August and September, in order to better recover from an ACL injury. The opposite hitter, who is currently signed to Superliga’s Cignal, sustained the injury to her right knee last November in a Philippine Grand Prix match against F2 Logistics.

Gonzaga told the media that she is not pressuring herself to get back to the court and instead is opting to take her recovery one step at a time:

“At this point in time, I do not even think about playing. I am shooting for a return, hopefully, only at the last quarter of this year or at the beginning of 2019. So far I’m okay, it has already been two months of recovery, and so far progress is good. I am doing basic physiotherapy and conditioning, but am still without a timetable for return. When everything is strengthened, I will be back.”

Gonzaga has been with the national team since 2015 and captained it during the 2015 Southeast Asian Games. In 2016, she was chosen as Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix best opposite spiker.
