The weather is heating up in Vienna, Austria and has begun to impact play at the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.
When the tournament started, the highs were only 82 degrees and the temperatures got as low as 60 – almost chilly for beach volleyball. But as the new week has become, temperatures in Vienna have skyrocketed.
Temperatures hit as high as 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37 Celcius), which is well above the 74 degree average high average for this time of year and ties the record set in 2013.
Many players have commented on the heat over the last few days in post-match interviews, though the heat hasn’t seemed to give a particular advantage to players from warmer countries. Of the men’s quarterfinalists, only 3 are from places known to be particularly warm (Spain, Brazil, Florida), while the rest are from chillier countries (Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Poland, Austria).
Fortunately, temperatures are expected to cool off for Saturday and Sundays finals matches. Highs on Saturday are only forecast for 89 degrees and on Sunday temperatures are expected to plummet all the way to 74 degrees – at a high.
The wind has been just as wild as the temperature swings, with recorded gusts at times upwards of 60 miles per hour. On average, though, they have been pretty calm.
Weekend rain, expected for Sunday afternoon, will bring in lots of changes to the conditions. Besides the rain itself and the connected temperature drop, wind speeds are expected to be up to 16 miles per hour, higher than they’ve been for the rest of the tournament.
