Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB) president Gustave Nkurunziza, who was re-elected for a second four-year team in the role in February, abruptly resigned from the office Wednesday.

“I would like to inform you that, for my own reasons, I have resigned from the position of the president of Rwanda Volleyball Federation Executive Committee with immediate effect,” Nkurunziza said in a statement sent to the federation. “I take this opportunity to thank everybody for the collaboration and teamwork she/he showed me all the time I have spent in the office.”

Nkurunziza had been in the news recently, after being arrested Feb. 19 alongside the FRVB secretary and treasurer. The group was accused of corruption and embezzlement for allegedly attempting to use federation money to bribe voters in the organization’s election. They were arrested and later released.

Nkurunziza defeated former Rwanda national team player Leandre Karekezi 18-9 in the election. It is unknown what the future of the presidency will be. Remaining in office are first vice president Julius Kagaram Kansiime and second vice president Jean Pierre Ribanje.

According to news reports, Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) Executive Director Jean De Dieu Mukundiyukuri also was arrested on similar corruption charges in February.
