Wichita State bounced back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat the Marquette Golden Eagles in a thrilling five-setter that ended on an ace by junior outside Tabitha Brown, who finished the early morning match with a double-double (21 kills, 18 digs).
Shocker setter Emily Hiebert also recorded a double-double (44 assists, 15 digs) and fell a single kill short of turning it into a triple. Wichita State libero Giorgia Civita led all defenders with 29 in a match that saw 185 total digs.
Three Golden Eagles recorded double-doubles: sophomore setter Lauren Speckman (64 assists, 10 digs), junior middle blocker Jenna Rosenthal (20 kills, 10 blocks) and freshman outside Hope Werch (13 kills, 19 digs). In addition to Speckman and Werch, three other Golden Eagles had double-digit digs, Martha Konovodoff (24), Anna Haak (16) and Manon Geoffroy (15). Sophomore outside Allie Barber led all Golden Eagles in hitting with 26 kills.
The match was all Marquette early, with the first set ending 25-20 on a Werch kill and the second 25-18 on a kill by Haak. The Golden Eagles had the early lead in the third as well, but an ace by Wichita State’s Kara Bown knotted the score at five and a Marquette hitting error gave the Shockers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, ending on a kill by middle blocker Brooke Smith.
In the fourth, Wichita State’s Gabi Mostrom went on a four-point serving run to build an 18-14 lead that would hold up and force the decisive tiebreaker set. The 5th set saw both teams trading points until a Werch ace built a 10-8 margin for the Golden Eagles. An Allie block gave Marquette the first of two match points, but the Shockers would fight off both and seal the 19-17 victory on a Tabitha Brown ace.
Both teams play later on Saturday with Marquette taking on Hampton Invitational host IUPUI and the Shockers facing Miami of Ohio.

Shockers Come Back for Win Over Marquette
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Wichita State earned a dramatic come from behind win over Marquette at the Hampton Inn Invitational. After dropping the first two sets, the Shockers came back to win the next three including a 19-17 win in the fifth. WSU won by scores of 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18 and 19-17.
Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with a career-high 21 kills along with 18 digs, while Abbie Lehman had 12 kills and five blocks. Emily Hiebert just missed a triple-double with nine kills, 44 assists and 15 digs. Giorgia Civita led the Shockers with a career-high 29 digs.
In her collegiate debut, Brooke Smith had five kills on eight swings and hit .625 and also added five blocks.
“It’s a turning point game,” head coach Chris Lamb said. “We decided to go with Brooke Smith in the third set. That child gets better every day in practice. She is sneaky efficient and just scores. I’m super proud of Emily (Hiebert). We had to play different to come back and win. In the fifth, we out hit them and that’s the match.”
SET 1:
• Marquette earned a come from behind 25-20 win in the first set
• The set went back and forth until the Shockers used a 3-0 run to take a 12-8 lead
• The Golden Eagles came back to tie it at 14 and used back-to-back blocks to push the lead to 19-16
• Kills from Lehman and Brown pulled the Shockers within 23-20, but Marquette closed out the set with the last two points
• Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with six kills in the set
SET 2:
• The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start on the way to a 25-18 win
• Marquette opened the set on a 9-0 run and increased it to 12-1
• A 5-0 Shocker run cut the lead to 18-14, but that was as close as WSU would get
SET 3:
• The Shockers got back in the match with a 25-20 win in the third set
• The Golden Eagles took a quick 5-2 lead, but the Shockers responded with a 7-0 run to go in front 9-5
• Marquette cut the lead to 17-16 with a kill, but a 4-0 Shocker run behind the serving of Emma Wright gave WSU a 21-16 advantage
• The Shockers went on to win the set 25-20 and it ended on the first career kill from Brooke Smith
SET 4:
• The Shockers forced the fifth set with a 25-18 win in the fourth
• The set went back and forth the Shockers used a 4-0 run to take a 19-14 lead
• Kills from Brown and Hiebert pushed the lead to 21-15 and WSU closed out the set on a 4-0 run for a 25-18 win
SET 5:
• The Shockers rallied for the 19-17 fifth set win
• The set went back and forth with Marquette taking the 8-7 lead at the halfway point
• A kill and ace for the Golden Eagles put them in front 10-8 and led to a WSU timeout
• WSU scored three of the next four to tie it at 11
• A kill and a block for Marquette gave the Golden Eagles a 13-11 lead as WSU took another timeout
• A Wright kill and Marquette hitting error tied the score at 13
• The Golden Eagles reached match point at 14-13 with a block, but Mikaela Raudsepp responded with a kill to tie it at 14
• Kills from Brown and Smith gave the Shockers match point at 16-15, but the Golden Eagles tied it at 16 with a kill
• A Golden Eagle hitting error gave WSU an 18-17 lead and Brown’s service ace gave the Shockers the 19-17 win

MU DROPS A 3-2 MATCH TO WICHITA STATE
Multiple Golden Eagles hit career-highs in the five-set battle
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Sophomore Allie Barber and redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal each reached career highs with 26 and 20 kills, respectively, but it was not enough for the Marquette University women’s volleyball team as the squad dropped a five-set battle, 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 18-25, 17-19) to Wichita State on Saturday morning at the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational.
Barber’s 26 kills led Marquette (2-3), while Rosenthal recorded her second career double-double with 20 kills and 10 blocks. Freshman Hope Werch also had a career day with her second double-double of the season on a career-best 13 kills and 19 digs, also a career high.
Five Golden Eagles recorded double digit digs led by freshman Martha Konovodoff with a career-best 24, Werch’s 19, junior Anna Haak tallied a career-best 16 digs, senior Manon Geoffroy’s 15 digs was a career number, while sophomore Lauren Speckman collected 10 digs and produced her second double-double this year as she also dished a career-best 64 assists.
Marquette held the Shockers (5-0) to a .207 hitting percentage and owned the defensive advantage with 96 digs. Wichita State was led by Tabitha Brown with 21 kills, while Giorgia Civita collected a match-high 29 digs.
The Golden Eagles have short rest and are back on the court at 6 p.m. CT to close out the tournament against the host IUPUI Jaguars.
