The Brazilian Cup is a very short single elimination tournament made up of only 7 games. The first 4 of them were just played to decide which teams will face off against each other in the semifinals. As expected, the four best-ranked Superliga teams this season made the cut, and are set to play the competition’s semifinals and finals on January 18 and 19, respectively. Camponesa/Minas will face off against Dentil Praia Clube/Uberlândia and Sesc/RJ will face off against Vôlei Nestlé/Osasco (which means fans will be guaranteed at least one extra game of one of volleyball’s hottest domestic derbies).

Here are the results:

Osasco handed Barueri a quick 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-15) loss. Osasco’s Tandara Caixeta led the way with 15 points, while Edinara Brancher had 9 points in the losing effort. Polish volleyball legend Katarzyna Skowronska made her first appearance for Barueri, subbing in throughout the game, and finishing the contest with 6 points. Here is what she had to say about her debut, per Melhor do Vôlei:

“I am very happy to return to the court after so many months away with an injury. But I leave the game disappointed with our result and the elimination from the tournament. Now I want to train even more in order to better help my team.”

Bernadinho’s Sesc/RJ had to overcome a 2-0 deficit in order to beat Pinheiros 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12). The competition’s website did not make any stats available to the public. However, Melhor do Vôlei posted a video on its official Facebook page showing Pinheiro’s coach being led off the court by back up setter Bruna Costa after arguing with referees, which can only lead us to believe that the game was very contested.
