After qualifying and the first three pool play matches in eight groups, teams from eight countries earned free passes to the second knockout round with pool titles. The victors included the top seven seeds and the No. 9 pair.
Italians Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth won their first tournament together since July 2016, while Russians Maksim Hudyakov/Ruslan Bykanov earned their second title of the season at the Agadir Two Star.
Serbia’s Stefan Basta/Lazar Kolaric, which started the tournament in the qualifying rounds, won their first FIVB World Tour gold medal at the Aydin One-Star, while Sweden’s Kristina Thurin/Susanna Thurin made history with a bronze on the women’s side, for their country’s first ever FIVB World Tour medal.
Friday was packed with pool play action at the Aydin One-Star with four men’s teams earning pool titles and eight women’s teams setting up for chances at pool crowns, which will decided early Saturday morning.
