Bulgarian star libero Teodor Salparov, who is now thirty-five years old, is best known for his two Olympic participation (2008 – 2012) with Bulgaria’s national team and his time with Russia’s Zenit Kazan, with which he won 3 consecutive CEV Champions League titles (2014-2017). Feeling that he is not the youngster he used to be anymore, he recently became one of the first high profile volleyball players to ever make public his experience with genetic testing in an attempt to prolong his career, according to sportal.bg.
Genetic testing provides significant amounts of information that can only be obtained by this type of specific intervention. It is mostly used in clinical environments for the detection of diseases and different kind of medical therapies. It has however, recently made its way into the athletic world, as more and more elite athletes are relying on it in hopes of optimizing their nutritional, recovery, and training regimens.
Specifically to Salparov, he has stated that he took a nutritional-specific genetic test to learn more about his nutritional profile. With this, he hopes his doctos can help him develop a diet tailored to his personal physiology and eating habits, thus allowing him to continue to play volleyball for years to come (and who knows, maybe also to continue staring on the cover of Bulgaria’s Men’s Health?).
