The injury bug has bitten 16th-ranked Thailand once again, as spiker Kongyot Ajcharaporn exited Wednesday’s match against the United States with an ankle injury in the 4th set. The leading scorer for the Thai did not return to the match, which the 2nd-ranked Americans went on to win in 5 sets.
Following the match, Thailand head coach Danai Sriwachamatyakul said that Ajcharaporn’s injury would be evaluated at the hospital, but believed the injury was not a serious one.
Ajcharaporn is the 10th-highest scoring player in 2018 FIVB World Championship action with 60 points and 59 spikes. She is the leading scorer for Thailand through 4 matches played.
Even a short rest period will have an impact for Thailand, as the team saw Pimpichaya Kokram sustain a right knee injury midway through the 3rd set against 34th-ranked Trinadad and Tobago yesterday. She did not appear in today’s match against the Americans.
Despite missing the match against the USA, Kokram has recorded the 16th-highest point total in the competition with 51. She has tallied 46 spikes, 3 blocks and 2 service aces.
With its Wednesday result, Thailand qualified for the 2nd round with its 2-2 FIVB World Championship record. The Thai will complete Pool C action with a match against Azerbaijan on October 4.
