Two Upsets Highlight Women’s #GC2018 Quarterfinals

Wednesday’s semifinal field has been determined after four men’s and four women’s quarterfinal matches at the Commonwealth Games.

Moving on from the men’s side are Canadians Sam Pedlow/Sam Schachter, England’s Chris Gregory/Jake Sheaf, New Zealand’s Sam O’Dea/Ben O’Dea and Australians Christopher McHugh/Damien Schumann.

Pedlow/Schachter are ranked No. 14 in the FIVB World rankings, while McHugh/Schumann (20) and Gregory/Sheaf (59) also are among the Top 100. The O’Deas check in at 144.

In the semis, the Aussies will face the English, while New Zealand and Canada will make up the other side of the bracket.

On the women’s side, favorites Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan of Canada and Mariafe Artacho del Solar/Taliqua Clancy from Australia moved on. Humana-Paredes/Pavan are No. 1 in the FIVB world rankings and Artacho del Solar/Clancy (19) follow.

Vanuatu’s Linline Matauatu/Miller Pata and Cyprus’ Matriota Angelopoulou/Manolina Konstantinou round out the semifinalists after pulling off upsets.

Angelopoulou/Konstantinou bested world #49 Shaunna Polley/Kelsie Wills from New Zealand in straight sets with help from a 5-0 lead in blocks, all off the hand of Konstantinou.

England’s No. 79 Jessica Grimson/Victoria Palmer (79) are out of the competition after a three-set loss to Matauatu/Pata, falling victim to eight aces.

The top seeded Canadians will face the upset minded team from Cyprus, while the homestanding Aussies will face the side from Vanuatu on Wednesday.

The medal matches will be played early Thursday morning.

Chris Gregory/Jake Sheaf (England) def. Robin Miedzybrodzki/Seain Cook (Scotland) 21-14, 21-17

Sam O’Dea/Ben O’Dea (New Zealand) def. Daynte Stewart/Danell Williams (Trinidad & Tobago) 21-15, 21-14

Christopher McHugh/Damien Schumann (Australia) def. Abubakar Kamara/Patrick Lombi (Sierra Leone) 21-12, 21-14

 

Womens’s Quarterfinals
Linline Matauatu/Miller Pata (Vanuatu) def. Jessica Grimson/Victoria Palmer (England) 23-25, 21-19, 15-12

Mariafe Artacho del Solar/Taliqua Clancy (Australia) def. Denyse Mutatsimpundu/Charlotte Nzayisenga (Rwanda) 21-9, 21-8

Matriota Angelopoulou/Manolina Konstantinou (Cyprus) def. Shaunna Polley/Kelsie Wills (New Zealand) 21-10, 21-17

Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan (Canada) def. Lynne Beattie/Melissa Coutts (Scotland)  21-9, 21-9
