USA’s Brunner/Patterson Upset Olympic Champions Cerutti/Schmidt In Two

2017 FIVB WORLD TOUR SEASON OPENER

The main draw of the Fort Lauderdale Major began today, with a large number of pairs competing for the $600,000 prize. The tournament features eight different pools of players, with eight just being added to the main draw after winning their qualification matches on Tuesday.

On the men’s side of things in the first part of pool play, reining Olympic champions Cerutti and Schmidt were upset in two sets by American squad Brunner/Patterson. While Dalhausser and Lucena continue their dominance on the beach, taking out both their opponents in two sets.

Brunner/Patterson (USA) def. Cerutti/Schmidt (BRA)

  • Score: 2-0, (21-14, 22-20)

#14 seed in the first major tournament of the year, Brunner and Patterson of the United States take down reigning Olympic champions and #1 seed Cerutti and Schmidt in two sets.

The first set was a dominate performance by the Americans, taking down the Brazilians 21-14. However, the second set was more of a challenge, with the score running up to 22-20 in favor of the American squad.

Rosenthal/Tr. Crabb (USA) def. Smedins/Samoilovs (LAT)

  • Score: 2-0, (25-23, 25-23)

The 31st seed of the tournament took down #2 seed, Latvian pair, Smedins and Samoilovs in a challenging two set match up. Each of the sets wen past the normal 21 points needed to win the match, scoring 25-23 in both sets.

Dalhausser/Lucena (USA) def. Harley/Ricardo (BRA)

  • Score: 2-0, (21-17, 21-18)

Three-time Olympian Dalhausser of the United States, comes out strong with partner Lucena in the pairs first match of the main draw. The #1 men’s pair took down Brazilians Harley and Ricardo in a straight set victory.
