The USAV Women’s Collegiate Beach Championships ended today with the first and third place matches being played. The tournament marks the first-ever of its kind and consisted of 24 pairs of women’s teams. As opposed to the men’s side, a great majority of the women’s team that competed were also paired together for their respective school’s beach teams.
First Place Match
- #1 Claes/Hughes 2; #4 Cannon/Martin 1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-11)
The championship match paired two USC teams against each other. The #1 seeded team of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes took on the #4 seeded team of Terese Cannon and Nicolette Martin. Cannon and Martin struck first, taking a competitive first set 21-19. However, Claes and Hughes came out strong in the second set and rolled to a 21-13 win. Then, in the third and decisive set, Claes and Hughes were able to pull out a 15-11 win to claim the championship.
Claes and Hughes advanced out of Pool A in first place with a 3-0 record, while Cannon and Martin finished third in Pool D with a 2-1 record.
Both teams are very familiar with each other as both competed during for USC during the regular season. As the #1 team, Claes/Hughes posted an impressive 38-1 record; while Cannon/Martin posted a 9-1 record as the #2 team and a 24-5 record as the #3 team. They helped USC to an impressive season where they won the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge, they won the PAC-12 tournament, and ultimately winning the NCAA Beach Championships.
Claes and Hughes finished the season with a 55-1 record, defending their 2015 AVCA Volleyball Championship.
Third Place Match
- #5 Quiggle/Howard 2; #17 Rohan/Ross 0 (21-17, 21-11)
The #5 seeded Pepperdine duo of Corinne Quiggle and Brittany Howard took third place with a 2-0 sweep over the #17 seeded team from Georgia State, Delaney Rohan and Chelsea Ross. Rohan and Ross competed well in the first set before ultimately falling 17-21. The second set showed Quiggle and Howard’s dominance as they would win the set and match 21-11.
It was nothing new for Quiggle and Howard to be side-by-side as the team was one of the best pairs for Pepperdine this season. As the #3 team, they posted a 28-3 record which helped proper Pepperdine to a second place finish at the NCAA Beach Championships.
Rohan and Ross were the #1 team for Georgia State this past season, posting an impressive 24-10 record which helped qualify them for the CCSA Championships.
Quiggle and Howard advanced out of Pool E, where they took first place with a 3-0 record that included a 2-1 win over Rohan and Ross.
