The opening weekend of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship ended with a bang on Saturday. The field for the Sweet 16 is set, but it didn’t happen without a few casualties: 4 seeded teams were knocked out. #8 Washington lost to Illinois, #9 Creighton lost to Michigan State, #12 Baylor lost to Colorado, #14 Iowa State lost to Wisconsin, and #16 Wichita State lost to Missouri.
The day started with chaos, but after a few upsets were narrowly missed (WKU vs. Kentucky, San Diego vs. USC, things settled down late for the most part to leave a fairly-typical 12 out of 16 national seeds in the 3rd round of play, with kicks off late next week.
The shakeup in the brackets were just enough to also result in a shakeup in our Bracket Contest, where Brett S jumped into the lead, on his own, with 56 points. WC Bias sits 2nd, while 6 players are tied for 3rd place – just 2 points back of the leader.
Among the top 13 players, there are 5 different teams selected for champion. 3, including the current leader Brett S, picked #1-seeded Penn State to win it all. The most popular choice among top players so far were the defending champions Stanford with 5 of the top 13 having selected them. #5 Nebraska got 3 votes, #2 Florida got 1, and the un-seeded, but rapidly-maturing, Wisconsin Badgers picked up a vote as well.
