2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

Want to know how the best in the world warm up at the World Championships? USA Volleyball has posted a video online of one of the top American pairs in beach volleyball, and the most dominant team of the early years of NCAA beach volleyball, Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes warming up earlier this week in Vienna, Austria at the World Beach Volleyball Championships.

In the first sequence, the most valuable athletically, Hughes warms up with a drill that provides a more realistic ball-control (and cardiovascular) warmup than traditional peppering. Her coach hits the ball over the net, and then she passes the ball to herself, sets the ball to herself, and hits a roll shot over the net.

This drill, which makes more sense in beach than it does in indoor volleyball, is explained more fully in the video below by Taye Im (Courtesy Art of Coaching Volleyball):

Hughes and Claes finished 2nd in their pool and will play Elsa/Amaranta of Spain, the tournament’s 23rd seeded team, in the round of 32 that begins on Wednesday.
