The Netherlands will take on Azerbaijan in the semifinal round of the 2017 CEV European Women’s Championships.
In the quarterfinals, the Netherlands took down Italy in straight sets, upsetting one of the favorites of the competition. Lonneke Sloetjes led the team with 20 points in the win while Anne Buijs added another 17. In the five matches that the Dutch have played in, Sloetjes had put down 79 points while Buijs has added another 67. The Dutch have made their way through the tournament in one of the toughest brackets and running through Croatia in the playoff stage to make the quarterfinals.
From Azerbaijan, Polina Rahimova has posted 94 points over four matches for the hosts. In the team’s sweep over Germany in the quarterfinals, Rahimova posted 21 points while Natalya Mammadova added another 17. The hosts of the tournament have been a shock to their opponents, coming out strong and not holding back on their way to the semifinals.
The two teams will have to rely on their top scorers to take down the other and not play with any nerves going forward in the competition to make the finals.
