Cucine Lube Civitanova will look to exit pool play with an undefeated record and have clinched a spot in the semifinals of the 2017 FIVB Men’s Club World Championships. They will face off against a strong Iranian squad, Sarmayeh Bank who have fallen in their first two matches of the competition.
Lube started things out with a three-set sweep over the reigning champions, Sada Cruzeiro and followed that performance up with a five-set battle against Zaksa Kedzierzyn-Kozle. The Italian team used a strong serve and block to fight back the Polish team with 11-3 aces and 14-9 blocks. In the five-set win, Tsvetan Sokolov led the team with 26 points while Osmany Juantorena added another 23.
The Italian team is without their captain, Dragan Stankovic, as he went down with an ankle injury against Sada Cruzeiro in the third set. It is uncertain when he will return to playing following the injury.
For Sarmayeh Bank, they struggled on the attack against Sada Cruzeiro on day two with just 31 kills to 53. They were, however, able to stay in the match with the help of their opponent as they committed 25 errors to 15.
