West Virginia opened Wednesday night’s Big 12 slate by picking up its first conference win. The Mountaineers cruised by the Wildcats in three sets, keeping Kansas State winless in the conference. #6 Texas continued its dominance over #18 Baylor at Gregory Gymnasium. The Longhorns forced 41 total errors from the Bears to pick up their second win of the Big 12 season. Finally, in the match of the night, Kansas overcame a 2-1 set deficit to knock off Oklahoma on the road in five sets.

  • Outside hitter Jada Burse led the Jayhawks with 20 kills. Fellow outside hitter Ashley Smith registered 14 and Rachel Langs chipped in 10.
  • Libero Allie Nelson was the defensive catalyst for the Jayhawks, as she finished with 25 digs.
  • Oklahoma outside hitter Alyssa Enneking led all players with 23 kills. Middle blocker Paige Anderson added 11 and outside hitter Sarah Maras registered 10.
  • Oklahoma had a difficult night on the attack. The Sooners were 61/178 in attacks with 30 errors, a .174 hitting percentage. Kansas finished 65/177 with 27 errors, a .215 mark.

Playing on the road in Norman, Oklahoma, the Kansas Jayhawks battled back to defeat the Sooners in five sets Wednesday night in a wild match.

Oklahoma controlled the opening set and then held off a late Kansas rally to go up 1-0 with a 25-22 win. In the second, the Jayhawks were the aggressor. Kansas built and sustained a four-point cushion for most of the set before a 7-2 run helped it grab the set 25-16.

Kansas controlled the early part of the third but an 8-1 run by Oklahoma put the Sooners in front, 20-13. Oklahoma then closed the door on the Jayhawks, taking the set 25-18.

The fourth set was highly contested until a 5-1 spurt gave the Jayhawks a 15-12 lead. The Sooners continued to battle, but it wasn’t enough as Kansas evened the match and forced a fifth set.

In the fifth, Oklahoma came out and grabbed the early lead, but a 7-1 surge put the Jayhawks in the driver’s seat. The Sooners kept it close, but in the end it was Kansas standing victorious, 15-10 in the fifth.

  • Right side hitter Natania Levak was extremely efficient for the Mountaineers. She tallied a match-high 11 kills in 17 total attacks without committing an error, good for a .647 clip. She also added six blocks. Her teammate, outside hitter Katelyn Evans, finished with 10 kills.
  • Middle blocker Katie Demeo was difficult for Kansas State to handle at the net, as she delivered eight blocks.
  • Outside hitter Kylee Zumach led Kansas State with seven kills and 10 digs, but hit just .120.
  • West Virginia hit .277 as a team while limiting the Wildcats to .141.
  • Kansas State has now dropped three straight, all in the Big 12, since getting off to a 10-1 record to open the season.
  • The Wildcats lead the Big 12 in kills per set at 14.11, but were held under that average (11, 7, 12) in all three sets against the Mountaineers.

#6 TEXAS DEF. #18 BAYLOR 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-15)

  • Texas moves to 7-3, 2-0; Baylor drops to 9-5, 1-2 in the Big 12.

  • Texas was led by outside hitter Micaya White’s 10 kills. White added nine digs and hit .588.
  • The Longhorns hit .333 while limiting Baylor to just .107.
  • Baylor had a difficult time finding any rhythm against the Longhorns. The Bears committed 25 attack errors, two receiving errors and 14 service errors.
  • Outside hitter Yossiana Pressley led the Bears with 11 kills. However, in 39 total attacks, she also committed 16 errors, which translates into a -.128 clip.
  • Texas is now 43-0 all-time against Baylor in Austin and the Longhorns have now swept the Bears six straight years at Gregory Gymnasium.
  • Baylor is now 1-3 against ranked opponents this season and is still seeking its first win over Texas since Oct. 27, 2001.
