Zenit St. Petersburg is the Newest Member of the Russian Super League

The Russian Super League, widely regarded as one of the best men’s volleyball leagues in the world, has confirmed a new club for the 2017-2018 season. Zenit St. Petersburg will compete in the top Russian league this season, taking over as the 12th team and replacing Dinamo Krasnodar who has been moved to the third Russian league amidst reports of financial issues.

Zenit St. Petersburg has already begun filling out a roster that is highlighted by some well-known and well-regarded Russian volleyball regulars. Early reports have Zenit St. Petersburg inking deals with Evgeniy Sivozhelez, Andrey Ashchev, and Aleksandr Volkov, who have all spent extensive time on the Russian national team. These three and will be counted on to provide leadership and experience for the new club. In addition, Cuban setter Oreol Camejo and Swedish opposite Nils John Marcus Nilsson have also reportedly signed on with the new club.

Zenit St. Petersburg will face stiff competition in the Super League, specifically from Zenit Kazan who has won back-to-back Russian SuperCups; four straight Russian Cups; and four-dtraight Russian League championships. Dynamo Moscow has collected 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in the Russian League since 2010 and Belogorie Belgorod has taken home a gold medal, a silver medal and 2 bronze medals in the last 4 years.
