The visiting #18 Baylor Bears staged a huge road sweep of the #10 Kansas Jayhawks behind a strong offensive performance by freshman outside Yossiana Pressley, who notched 19 kills on .410 hitting.
Baylor’s win snapped a nine-match losing streak against the Jayhawks dating back to 2012. It was also the visitors’ first victory on the Jayhawks’ home floor since 2010.
“Yossi [Yossiana Pressley] had another outstanding performance,” said Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre. Offensively, she was virtually unstoppable and reliable for us. I thought we got good production from our middles, both a combination of our blocking and offensively attacking.”
Other key contributors for the Bears included sophomore middle Shelly Fanning (12 kills, 8 blocks), junior outside Aniah Philo (10 kills), freshman setter Hannah Lockin (36 assists) and senior libero Jana Brusek (14 digs).
For the Jayhawks, sophomore outside Ashley Smith registered a team-best 10 kills, replacing injured senior outside Madison Rigdon for the fourth straight match. Senior setter Ainise Havili dished out 27 assists and sophomore libero Allie Nelson tallied 11 digs.
Leading 15-13 in the first, Baylor scored five of the next six points on their way to a 25-17 win. In the second frame, Kansas built a 15-8 lead before the Bears went on a 7-2 run to close to within two, eventually winning the set 25-21. Baylor jumped ahead early in the third and maintained a lead throughout, sealing the 25-18 victory on a double block by Fanning and Pressley.
Next up, Kansas travels to Texas on Wednesday to take on the #5 Longhorns, while Baylor hosts Kansas State, also on Wednesday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 23 Baylor volleyball (21-5, 11-2 Big 12) earned its fifth consecutive win with a 3-0 sweep over the 11th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (21-5, 10-3 Big 12) Saturday afternoon at Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence, Kan., 25-17, 25-21, 25-18.
Now the winner of 15 consecutive sets, Baylor earned its first victory over the Jayhawks since Nov. 3, 2012 and first on the road since Nov. 17, 2010. The Bears’ win marked the first over Kansas under third-year head coach Ryan McGuyre.
Reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Yossiana Pressley led the way with 19 kills on a .410 attack effort, followed by Shelly Fanning with 12 and Aniah Philo with 10. Fanning matched a career-high eight blocks against the Jayhawks, allowing Baylor to finish with 10.0.
Set one went back and forth until a kill from Pressley gave BU the 15-13 lead at the media timeout. The Bears won five of the next six points to go up 19-14 behind a Philo kill, forcing a KU timeout. Two Jayhawk errors helped Baylor take the early advantage, 25-17.
Kansas came back in the second set and took a 15-8 lead behind an 8-0 run from Tori Miller. Quickly after that, the Bears rolled off seven of the next nine points to pull within two and force a KU timeout. The Bears ultimately took the lead with a late 4-0 run to take the commanding lead, winning set two 25-21.
Baylor hopped out to a 5-2 lead early in set three but then used back-to-back aces from Fanning to jump in front, 8-4. Kansas pulled within three after consecutive kills from Kelsie Payne, but the Baylor block stepped up and provided the final point for the sweep, 25-18.

TOP QUOTE
“Yossi (Pressley) had another outstanding performance. Offensively, she was virtually unstoppable and reliable for us. I thought we got good production from our middles, both a combination of our blocking and offensively attacking. Good offensive night for us. If you get 19 kills in a set, then that means you’re earning a lot of your points. Against a really good Kansas team, you’re going to have to earn most of your points. We spent a lot of time on defense as far as picking our spots and trying to be a little more disruptive with our blocking schemes. They’re a good team. We had to adjust for No. 12 (Ashley Smith) on the outside to be able to block and slow her down.” -head coach Ryan McGuyre

No. 11 Kansas volleyball falls against No. 23 Baylor
LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the eighth top-25 matchup of the season for Kansas volleyball, the 11th-ranked Jayhawks fell in three sets to No. 23 Baylor on Saturday afternoon at Horejsi Family Athletics Center (25-17, 25-21, 25-18).
The Jayhawks (21-5, 10-3 Big 12) were led by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Smith, who recorded a team-high 10 kills while making her fourth career start in place of injured All-American Madison Rigdon.
Baylor’s Yossiana Pressley registered 19 kills on a .410 hitting percentage as the Bears (21-5, 11-2) won their fifth-straight match in straight-set fashion by holding KU to a season-low .126 hitting percentage. BU’s current winning streak started after KU swept Baylor in three sets in Waco on Oct. 18.
On Veterans Day, Marine Maj. Jake MacDonald got the match started with an honorary first serve after the national anthem was sang by Army Sgt. Ashley Reynolds.
Smith registered two of her 10 kills and a block-assist to give Kansas an early 4-1 lead in the first set. But Baylor went on to regroup and total 19 team kills in the opening set on the way to a 25-17 first-set decision.
Senior defensive specialist Tori Miller leads the team in serving scoring runs of 7-0 or longer this season (eight) and in the second set she took to the service line for an 8-0 run to help lift Kansas to a 15-8 lead. Baylor countered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 18-17, and went on to win the second set, 25-21.
In the third set, the Bears took a 4-1 lead and never trailed before clinching the win with a 25-18 third-set win.
Saturday marks the first time Kansas has been swept in a Big 12 Conference match at home since Sept. 28, 2011 against then-No. 16 Iowa State. Baylor also snapped KU’s nine-match winning streak in the series against the Bears.
