2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

#2 seeded Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude take down Finland’s Riikka Lehtonen and Taru Lahti-Liukkonen 2-0, (21-17, 21-19). The win moves the German team to the quarterfinals while the Finnish pair is eliminated.

Despite the loss, the Finnish pair didn’t play horribly, it came down to the most mistakes made, which were Lehtonen/Lahti-Liukkonen. Finland made 14 errors in the match as opposed to Germany’s 9.

Overall, Finland scored more on the attack than the Germans did but the errors were the downfall for the team.

The first set was not super successful for the Finnish squad so after the first set, the Finnish pair changed their strategy against the Germans, serving more aggressively, which created a problem on the receive. “We regained our aggressiveness and I’m glad we won 2-0,” said Sude.

The win moves the Germans to play a strong Canadian team that has been improving rapidly this season – Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes.

“The Canadians are having a very consistent season. I believe they were on the podium in each tournament they played over the last couple of months. They have a very tall blocker (Pavan), so we need to make something different and be really smart on how we play this game,” said Sude.
