Five American teams, including Pool C winners Kerri Walsh Jennings/Brooke Sweat, remain among the final 24 teams at the Chetumal Three Star in Mexico. Top seeded Canadians Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson and collegiate stars Nicole and Megan McNamara also won their respective pools on Thursday.
Women’s pool play continues on Friday with all 32 teams in action. First up, beginning at noon ET are the pool title matches, including three American pairs. Mens action begins at 2:30 p.m. ET.
After pool play, No. 2 seed Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson of Canada and No. 8 Katharina Schutzenhofer/Lena Plesiutschnig of Austria are out of the competition after going 0-2 in their respective pools. Americans Kelly Claes/Brittany Hochevar and Lauren Fendrick/Sarah Sponcil won their respective pool titles.
The podium matches are set for the men’s Tokyo Three Star, while the women’s first of the women’s semifinalists was decided. Team USA’s Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick will vie for bronze, while Lauren Fendrick/Sarah Sponcil are in the women’s quarterfinals.
Americans Betsi Flint/Emily Day and Lauren Fendrick/Sarah Sponcil and three Japanese duos are among 16 women’s teams left at the Tokyo Three Star. Meanwhile, Team USA’s Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick remain among the final eight on the men’s side.
After two days of pool play, the women’s field is down to 24 teams, while the men are set to wrap up pool action on Thursday at the CEV European Beach Championships.
Morning action at the DELA Beach Open saw the women’s field cut from 16 to eight during the second elimination round. Two Brazilian teams, including Barbara/Fernanda remain in the competition.
As action continues at the DELA Beach Open on Saturday, fans can gear up to watch the final two rounds of men’s and women’s play Saturday afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. ET and early Sunday morning.
#2 seeded Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude take down Finland’s Riikka Lehtonen and Taru Lahti-Liukkonen 2-0, (21-17, 21-19). The win moves the German team to the quarterfinals while the Finnish pair is eliminated.
An all-German clash in the Round of 32 went in favor of Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude over Julia Grossner/Nadja Glenzke 2-0, (21-14, 21-12).
