Each year the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Executive Committee selects a senior player who was nominated by her principal and coach and was determined to have best demonstrated mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability as the “Mental Attitude Award Winner.”
IHSAA partner Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance makes a $1,000 donation to the school’s general scholarship fund in the name of each winning athlete.
This year, there were four Indiana volleyball state champions, and for 3 of those schools, this was a second-straight award.
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Nia Robinson of Indianapolis Cathedral as the winner of the Class 4A Mental Attitude Award.
4A Winner – Nia Robinson, Indianapolis Cathedral
A 2016 Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year nominee, Nia Robinson has had an impressive individual career while leading the Fighting Irish to three consecutive State Finals appearances. In addition to being named Indiana 4A 1st Team All-State this year, Nia earned a spot on the AVCA/Under Armour All-America 2nd Team. Last season, she was named a PrepVolleyball High School All-American, a MaxPreps Underclass All-American, and earned a place on the AVCA Phenom Watch List. Nia finished her career at Cathedral second all-time in career kills, and is the school record holder in spike attempts.
Off of the court, Nia’s accomplishments and service records are equally impressive. She is a Minority Engineering Program Speaker in Indiana, a member of the Girl Scouts, and also serves at the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity. At school, she is a member of the National Honors Society, is a Peer Mentor, volunteers with Best Buddies, and also helps with Cathedral’s Riley Dance Marathon.
The daughter of Cynthia Robinson, Nia will attend Northwestern University in the fall and plans on studying medicine while playing volleyball for the Wildcats.

3A Winner – Olivia Reed, Yorktown High School
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Olivia Reed of Yorktown High School as the winner of the Class 3A Mental Attitude Award.
The Tigers’ Team Captain helped her team to four consecutive conference championships, back-to-back State Finals appearances, and was recognized as a member of the Academic All-State team this past season. In addition to excelling on the volleyball court, Olivia is also the captain of the Yorktown Track and Field team, where she earned honors as a Coaches Association All-State First Team member as a junior.
In the classroom and in her community, Olivia is a National Honors Society member, a member of Yorktown’s Riley Dance Marathon Executive Committee, is a member of the student-council, and was voted as the Student Body President her senior year. She volunteers regularly the Break Basket Soup Kitchen and as a Youth Group and Bible study leader in her church. She has even found time to do mission work and has participated in the St. Louis MO-tutoring program, where she tutors refugee children, mentors inner-city students, and aids the elderly.
The daughter of Dr. Tod and Angela Reed of Yorktown, Olivia intends to enroll at Indiana University and pursue either a pre-medicine or pre-law degree.

1A Winner – Olivia Martin, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian
At the conclusion of the state finals, the IHSAA Executive Committee, on behalf of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, named Olivia Martin of Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian as the winner of the Class A Mental Attitude Award.
Olivia is a four-year starter for the Braves, and has helped lead her team to four consecutive Regional Championships and their first appearance in the state finals.
Voted a team captain this past season, she led Blackhawk Christian in kills, digs, and blocks. In addition to her success in the gym, Olivia was also a participant in the 2014 Beach Volleyball Nationals. As a leader on the court and in the classroom, Olivia is a member of her school’s National Honor Society and is an Honor Roll student.
Olivia is the daughter of Tom and Dee Martin of Fort Wayne. She plans to attended the University of Indianapolis to study Biology.
