#6 Cal Poly Edges #5 LBSU; 49ers Rebound in Big West Challenge Split

The final day of the Big West Challenge in Sacramento, California, brought mixed results for No. 5 Long Beach State.

No. 6 Cal Poly pulled a slight upset with a 3-2 win over the 49ers, winning on courts 1, 2 and 3. Emily Sonny/Samantha Manley had the match of the day on Court 2, besting LBSU’s Anete Brinke/Sasha Karelov in three sets, including a 24-22 Set 3 score to move to 20-1 on the year. Two other matches went the distance, with Long Beach State winning on Courts 4 and 5.

LBSU had to change up its lineup against Cal Poly due to the absence of sophomore Hailey Harward, who played in the tournament opener, but was held out in the next two matches on Saturday.

Harward’s partner Kristyna Adamcikova won despite the change, winning at No. 4 in three sets alongside Nicci Reinking against Cal Poly. Adamcikova then played on Court 3 in the tournament finale, pairing with Claire Newlander for a straight-set win.

In the second match of the day, Long Beach State made quick work of Sacramento State, besting the Mustangs in five straight-set affairs. 

The 49ers wrapped the tournament with a 3-2 record and moves to 18-4. Cal Poly finished its stay in Sacramento with a 4-1 mark, moving to 19-3 on the season. Sacramento State dropped its fourth straight match of the tournament and fell to 1-12.
