Eczacibasi VitrA have hired Marco Aurélio Motta as Head Coach for 2017-18 season. Motta returns to the team after serving as head coach from 2004-2007.
Motta first started coaching in 1984 when he coached Brazilian club team Bradesco SC. A year later in 1985, he became the head coach of the Brazilian junior national women’s national team. With the junior national team, Motta won the World Championship in 1987 before leaving the team to coach Brazilian club team Lutkin SC from 1987-88; his Lutkin SC team won the Brazilian club championships. In 1991, Motta became the head coach of the Italian junior women’s national team. Motto and his Italian team won the European championships twice, beating Russia who was a 13-time European champion until then; Motta left the junior national team in 1996.
In 1997, Motta spearheaded a Brazilian campaign called “Viva Volei” that was aimed at teaching volleyball to 30,000 children. He ran this campaign until 2000 before he became the head coach of the Brazilian women’s national team from 2001-03. Then, in 2004, he became the head coach for Eczacibasi VitrA for three seasons. In his first season, VitrA finished third in the Turkish league before winning first place champions the next two seasons.
Motta took some time away from coaching until he made his return in 2011 as the head coach for Turkey’s women’s national team. Motta led the Turkish team to a third place finish at the 2011 Women’s European Championship and a third place finish at the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix. Then, in 2012, Turkey made its first-ever appearance in the Olympics.
VitrA finished the regular season in third place in the Turkish league with a 17-5 record; Vakifbank was first place and Fenerbahce was second place.
Current head coach Massimo Barbolini will become the head coach for Italian club Novara.
VitrA is currently competing in the Women’s Club World Championships in Kobe, Japan. After dropping their first match to Volero Zurich 0-3, VitrA bounced back to beat Osasco 3-1.
