31-year old Canadian National Teamer Gavin Schmitt is one of 5 players who will leave Polish side Asseco Resovia this off-season. Schmitt finished his season on the bench, after injuries (including his and both of the team’s liberos) derailed a promising season into a 4th-place finish in the post-season tournament for the squad out of Rzeszow.
Schmitt’s last appearance was February 10th thanks to a lingering shoulder injury.
Schmitt will head to Japan to join the champion Toray Arrows. There, he will have the task of replacing the league MVP Nikola Gjorgiewa, a Macedonian national.
The 6’10” Schmitt hits at 369cm (145 in.) and blocks at 339cm (133 in.). This is second stint in eastern Asian: he won 3 Korean V-League Championships from 2010-2012 with Daejeon Samsung. Toray will be Schmitt’s 8th professional team since finishing his college career at the University of Saskatchewan.
He’s been a member of the Canadian National Team since 2007, winning two medals at the NORCECA Championship (2011 bronze, 2013 silver), and one at the Pan American Games (2015, Toronto).
According to the team’s website, Schmitt is one of 5 players to have already left the team this off-season. The list includes Piotr Nowakowski, who has been with the team since 2011.
Also departing is 23-year old American National Teamer Thomas Jaeschke, who leaves in spite of 1 year remaining on his contract. Jaeschke missed the first half of the season while back in the United States finishing his college degree, but rejoined his club in December.
The 5 departures:
- Thomas Jaeschke
- Gavin Schmitt
- Damian Wojtaszek
- Frederic Winters
- Piotr Nowakowski
