Ashlyn Fleming Becomes 4th Pacific Player to Transfer, Heads to Illinois

The latest benificiary of a transfer out of the Pacific volleyball program is Illinois, who is bringing on former Tiger Ashlyn Fleming. A 6’4″ middle blocker, Fleming will be a junior for the 2018 season with two years left of play and is set to be immediately eligible.

A native of San Jose, California, Fleming prepped at Valley Christian High School. She then attended Pacific in 2016 when she was West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team and All-WCC Honorable Mention when she hit .337 with per set numbers of 2.40 kills and 0.97 blocks.

It was more of the same for Fleming as a sophomore in her most recent campaign, when she was All-WCC Honorable Mention once again. In total for the year she recorded 285 kills (2.44 per set) on a .347 mark, 125 blocks (1.07 per set), 59 digs (0.50 per set), 22 aces (0.19 per set) and 19 assists (0.16 per set).

“We are excited to announce the addition of Ashlyn to the program,” Illinois head coach Chris Tamas said in the team’s release of the addition. “She embodies the type of student-athlete we strive to bring to Illinois. She has proven herself to be a tough competitor in a very good conference and we look forward to having her in our gym and a part of our Illinois family.”

Overall its the fourth player to have left Pacific this offseason via transfer. The three others departing the program are setter Andie Shelton (to Duke), outside hitter Skylar Wine (to North Carolina) and outside hitter Emily Baptista (to USC).

For Illinois, it’s their gain after losing four players out of their program to transfer, including middle Tyanna Omazic – the team’s second best blocker in 2017 – to Missouri. The move gives them three middle blockers.

The 2018 season begins on August 24 with matches against UNC Wilmington and Colorado State. They are coming off of a 23-11 finish in 2017 with an appearance in the Sweet 16.
