Big Ten: Iowa Upsets #5 Wisconsin, #17 Michigan Survives in 5

Iowa upset #5 Wisconsin for the first time since 2009, surviving a late Set 5 charge. Michigan also escaped with a five-set home win, moving past Indiana.

#4 Minnesota snapped #3 Nebraska’s 14-match win streak to claim the top spot in the Big Ten standings after Week 3. Purdue and Maryland also picked up road wins, topping Michigan State and Rutgers.

Penn State avenged an earlier season loss to Ohio State, while Illinois made quick work of Northwestern as Ali Bastianelli set the school’s career blocks record.

#25 Iowa def. #5 Wisconsin 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12)

  • Iowa claims its first win over Wisconsin since 2009, snapping a 15-match losing streak.
  • Wisconsin led Iowa in kills (72-68), blocks (12-9) and efficiency (.288 to .254). Both teams managed six aces.
  • Cali Hoye (30) and Taylor Louis (24) combined for 54 of Iowa’s 68 kills in the victory.
  • Hoye hit at a team-best .300 clip and also managed 14 digs to go with her career-high 30 kills, which were the most for a Hawkeye since Julie Williams in 1997.
  • Brie Orr dished out 59 assists and added 13 digs for the Hawkeyes.
  • Five Badger players managed double-digit kill tallies led by Grace Loberg‘s 19. Dana Rettke (14), Madison Duello (13), Tionna Williams (11) and Molly Haggerty (10) followed. Haggerty finished off a double-double with 10 digs.
  • Iowa outhit Wisconsin .386 to .318 in Set 5, which was never in doubt after the Hawkeyes went up 8-2 with three Hoye kills and a Louis ace. Hoye added two more putaways to push the margin to eight at 12-4. Facing match point at 14-7, Wisconsin scored five in a row, with two kills and two blocks by Rettke, to narrow the gap to two at 14-12 before Louis sealed the upset.

#17 Michigan def. Indiana 3-2 (19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 16-14)

  • Michigan boasted slight edges in kills (69-63), efficiency (.202 to .196) and aces (2-1), but trailed Indiana 10-8 in blocks.
  • Carly Skjodt piled up a match-high 29 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .352 to lead the Wolverines to victory.
  • MacKenzi Welsh dished out 60 assists and added 16 digs for a double-double of her own.
  • Breana Edwards turned in 22 kills and 10 digs to lead the Hoosiers, while Bayli Lebo pulled up a match-high 26 digs.
  • Indiana boasted an 8-5 lead at the changeover in Set 5 and went on to a 14-12 advantage, before succumbing to the homestanding Wolverines. Michigan grabbed brief leads at 9-8 and 11-10, before falling behind at 14-12. The Wolverines capped the match with four straight points, two on Skjodt putaways and two on Hoosier miscues.

#23 Purdue def. Michigan State 3-1 (15-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-17)

  • After hitting .000 (8-8-34) in the opening set, Purdue hit .458 in Set 2 and continued on to a .199 effort on the night, besting MSU’s .095 percentage.
  • The Boilermakers outdid the Spartans 49-39 in kills, but trailed 11-9 in blocks and 3-2 in aces.
  • Grace Cleveland (15) and Caitlyn Newton (12) led the Boilermaker offense with double-digit efforts. Cleveland hit at a .367 clip and put up a team-best six blocks.
  • Alyssa Chronowski notched a 12-kill, 10-dig double-double and four blocks to pace Michigan State.
  • Purdue trailed by as many as four in Set 4 (12-8), but rallied to close out the set and match on a 17-5 run. Four Cleveland kills and four MSU miscues highlighted the rally.

#12 Penn State def. Ohio State 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-22)

  • Adanna Rollins posted a season and match-high 17 kills, nine digs and four blocks to guide Minnesota, while three others added double-digit kill tallies.

#7 Illinois def. Northwestern 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13)

  • Ali Bastianelli set the career blocks record for Illinois with five in the victory over the Wildcats, moving her career tally to 656.
