Columbia picked up its second win of the Pan Am Cup, smoking Mexico in a sweep. Meanwhile, Brazil kept its stranglehold atop Group C and punched its ticket to the semis with a five-set win over Argentina.
Columbia def. Mexico 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-12)
Dayana Segovia notched a match-high 17 points and the Columbians picked up 23 points on Mexican miscues in an easy sweep on Tuesday.
Segovia posted 15 kills and two blocks. Maria Margarita Martinez and Amanda Coneo chipped in 10 points apiece, including nine and eight putaways respectively. Melissa Rangel starred at the net with a match-high four blocks, part of her seven point tally.
“We concentrated on a study of Mexico after watching them playing spectacular volleyball against Argentina,” Columbia coach Antonio Rizola said. “Our two main objectives are to improve the technique and then the confidence.”
Samantha Bricio racked up 15 points for Mexico on 13 kills and two aces, but her nearest help came from Ana Valle’s five points (3 kills, 2 blocks). Andrea Rangel and Jocelyn Urias added four points apiece.
“You have to pay for your errors,” Mexico coach Ricardo Ponce said. “In the decisive points of the first two sets we failed. That was the difference. We had good moments.”
Brazil def. Argentina 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 15-6)
Five double-digit scoring efforts and 36 Argentine errors helped Brazil to a five-set win and the Pool C title.
Fernanda Tome paced the victors with 19 points (12 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks), while Thaisa Daher de Menezes, Jacintho Francynne, Bruna Marques and Maira Claro tacked on 11 points apiece. Claro downed 10 kills, while Daher (8), Marques (7) and Jacintho (6) followed. Jacintho also put up a match-high four blocks. Marques served up four aces alongside Tome and Daher added three perfect serves as Brazil outdid Argentina 14-5 in aces.
Elina Rodriguez (17), Paula Yamila Nizetich (16) and Agnes Tosi (11) led the way for Argentina. Rodriguez scored all 17 of her points on kills, while Nizetich managed 15 putaways and an ace. Tosi turned in six kills, four blocks and an ace.
Argentina boasted a 56-45 lead in kills, but trailed the Brazilians in blocks (9-5), aces (14-5) and points off errors (36-25).
“It was a match as we expected,” Brazilian captain Dani Lins said. “There is a lot of rivalry between these two teams. We served well and had a good volume in defense and blocking.”
Despite the loss, Argentina was pleased with its efforts.
“I think we showed the real level of Argentina,” Nizetich said. “The tie-breaker could have gone either way. They served better and made less mistakes.”
Coach Guillermo Orduna also expressed his pleasure even in defeat.
“We appealed to the experience of some of the players,” Orduna said. “I really give credit to the team effort and their performance. To have a 3-2 result against Brazil is a booster in our confidence.”
