Brazil’s Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes captured their fourth FIVB title of the season and second straight, rallying from down a set for the gold medal. The pair, which won gold medals at last week’s Long Beach President’s Cup, Moscow Three Star, and Fort Lauderdale Five Star, defeated Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes 20-22, 21-18, 16-14.
The match marked the third straight three-set affair for the Canadians, following victories over Swiss duo Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre 21-15, 26-28, 15-10 in the quarters and Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh 21-13, 19-21, 16-14 in the semis.
Larissa/Talita made their way to the championship, by downing Germany’s Chantel Laboureur and Julia Sude in the quarters and countrywomen Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda “Duda” Lisboa in the semis.
Walsh Jennings/Branagh forfeited the third place match to Agatha/Duda after Walsh Jennings injured her shoulder in the semifinal match vs. Pavan/Humana-Paredes. The pair was looking for its first podium finish in just their fourth FIVB tournament since joining forces.
