Canada has been selected to host the NORCECA Women’s Nations League Challenger tournament that will run in conjunction with the 2018 Nationals in Edmonton from May 17-20.

This challenger tournament is a part of the women’s qualification process form the newly formed FIVB Volleyball Nations League that is taking over for the FIVB World League and FIVB World Grand Prix. There will be a total of six countries in attendance of the qualification event in Edmonton and all will be vying for the one spot allotted to NORCECA.

The winner of the NORCECA qualification tournament will then be entered into the Challenger Cup to which the winner will play the fourth-placed challenger team from the Nations League. The winner of this match will automatically earn a spot in the 2019 FIVB Nations League.

The challengers of the Nations League on the women’s side are – Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Poland and Belgium.

The tournament will give Canada and the other five teams in participation a chance to get more of their youth player involved with Nationals to international play. Canada was a part of Group 2 in the FIVB World Grand Prix in 2017 where they finished 8th overall, missing out on the Final Four of the competition. Coming up at the end of the year for the Canadians will be the 2018 World Championships, to which they qualified through a NORCECA qualifier event.
