Coppola/Nuss, Sonny/Van Winden, McNamaras Go 2-0 on WUC Day 1

2018 World University Beach Championships

Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss of LSU and Emily Sonny/Torrey Van Winden of Cal Poly went 2-0 to open the World University Beach Championships representing the United States, while UCLA stars Nicole McNamara/Megan McNamara also won two matches representing Canada.

Coppola/Nuss, which went 30-7 on Court 1 for the Tigers and won the USA Beach Collegiate Championship, opened the day with a tiebreak win over Leonie Klinke/Leonie Kortzinger of Germany (21-17, 16-21, 15-11) and added 21-14, 21-17 sweep of Marta Duda/Marta Lodej of Poland in Pool A action.

Sonny/Van Winden, who are fresh off seven wins and the gold medal at the FIVB Porec One Star and finished third at the USA Beach Championships, won in straight sets against Latvia’s Alise Pastare/Ruta Treija and Julika Hoffman/Lisa-Sophie Kotzan of Germany to sit atop Pool B.

The McNamara twins, who were VolleyMob Court 1 All-Americans in 2018, walked over Czech duo Nicole Dostalova/Anna Komarkova and South Africa’s Bejanke Della/Manana Mosia in Pool H.

  • Pool C: Spain’s Maria Carro/Paula Soria went 2-0 with straight set wins.
  • Pool D: New Zealand’s Alice Bain/Olivia MacDonald and Japan’s Kaho Sakaguchi/Reika Murakami are 2-0 after the opening day matches.
  • Pool E: Switzerland’s Fabienne Geiger/Anja Licka are in the driver’s seat after a tiebreak win over Singapore’s Eliza Chong/Lau Ee Shan and a 21-19, 21-19 squeaker over Sri Lanka’s Kasuri Lankeshwara/Nureka Thennakoon.
  • Pool F: Dutch duo Katja Stam/Pleun Ypma and Czech pair Tereza Kotlasova/Daniela Resova notched a pair of sweeps.
  • Pool G: Australia’s Nicole Laird/Brittany Kendall sit atop Pool G after besting Slovenia’s Nika Benedik Bevc/Nika Hrovat and edging past Estonia’s Heleene Hollas/Liisa Soomets in tiebreak (17-21, 21-18, 15-12).
