Various news sources around the world are beaming with reports that Team USA’s David Lee has signed with Argentinian club UPCN. Lee would fill in for Brazilian middle blocker Pedro Silva, who had his contracted rescinded due to poor play.

Lee has had a tremendous volleyball career so far. He was an Olympic champion in Beijing (2008), and also won two FIVB World Leagues (2008 and 2014), and one FIVB World Cup (2015). He also captained Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games. At the club level, he has played in many leagues around the world, but is best known for his time in Italy’s Modena and his many seasons in Russia with Zenit Kazan, Dynamo Moscow, Kemerovo, and Novosibirsk. He also recently played in the NVA, USA’s new professional league, with Blizzard Volleyball.

If the move indeed happens, it would take fans by surprise, as Lee was recently very adamant about his intentions to return to Greek League’s PAOK. Just two days ago, he posted a picture on his personal Instagram page flying out of LAX International airport, but did not comment on his destination:

UPCN is on of South America’s best clubs. In its short 10 year history, it has won the Argentinian League 6 times (2010–11, 2011–12, 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015-16), and was awarded the bronze medal at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship twice (2014, 2015). It is currently in 3rd place of Argentinian League’s standings with an 8-3 record.
