Dutch Pairs Brouwer/Meeuwsen, Varenhorst/Bouter Lead Hague Semis Field

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – Saturday was chock full of men’s action as the main draw began and the field was whittled down from 32 to four.

After three elimination rounds, Latvia’s Martins Plavins/Edgars Tocs, Dutch pairs Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen and Christiaan Varenhorst/Jasper Bouter and Polish duo Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak will vie for the title beginning at 1:45 a.m. ET Sunday.

No. 17 seed Plavins/Tocs are in just their second tournament together after playing at a zonal event in Moscow in December, where they finished 13th. Plavins previously played with Heralds Regza from 2015 to 2017

Brouwer/Meeuwsen are the top seed of the tournament. The duo has won 10 titles since pairing up in 2011, including the Xiamen Three-Star in April and several national level events. The team was fifth at the Hague Three-Star in 2017.

Second seeded Kantor/Losiak, who have been partners since 2009, have won seven previous FIVB medals, including gold at the Rio Grand Slam in 2016. The pair also was runner-up at the Gstaad Five Star in July, Rio Four Star in May and Kish Island Three Star in February. The Polish duo did not compete at the Hague in 2017.

No. 23 seed Varenhorst/Bouter are in their third tournament together, following a pair of national level events in August and September where the team finished second and first respectively.

The bronze medal will be decided at 6:45 a.m. with the championship match to follow at 8 a.m.

All four semifinal and podium matches will be streamed live on the FIVB YouTube channel.

American pairs Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans and Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick were elimination in the opening round of the main draw, with the latter falling in three sets after winning the opening stanza.

The final remaining American duo, Billy Allen and Ryan Doherty, saw their tournament come to an end in the second elimination round after winning the opening set against Varenhorst/Bouter.
