In a stacked qualifying pool, only four teams per gender advanced through Thursday’s matches into the main draw.
The women’s group included No. 1 Melissa Humana-Paredes/Sarah Pavan, who have several FIVB medals under their belt in 2018 as well as No. 2 seed Aurora Davis/Bree Scarbrough, who were fourth place finishers at last week’s Jinjiang Two Star. Another notable pair among the qualifying group is Terese Cannon/Corinne Quiggle, who played collegiately for USC and Pepperdine respectively.
Humana-Paredes/Pavan were knocked out by No. 9 Delaney Knudsen/Jessica Sykora in a three-setter in the final qualifying match, 18-21, 22-20, 15-12.
Davis/Scarbrough pushed through three tiebreak matches to earn their spot in Friday’s main draw, topping No. 34 Laurel Weaver/Meghan Wheeler (19-21, 21-15, 15-8), No. 18 Heather Boyan/Kristen Petrasic (21-13, 20-22, 16-14) and Cannon/Quiggle (17-21, 21-18, 15-10).
No. 3 Lara Dykstra/Sheila Shaw also went the distance in all three of their qualifying matches, squeaking past Vanessa Freire/Tory Paranagua, who played collegiately at Florida State, (21-19, 17-21, 15-6), No. 14 Kimberly Hildreth/Sarah Schermerhorn (21-18, 13-21, 15-13) and No. 6 Mackenzie Ponnet/Kimberly Smith (17-21, 21-17, 15-10).
No. 5 Christina Matthews/Brittany Tiegs rounded out the group of four headed to the main draw, winning two straight-set affairs, before clawing past No. 20 Lauren Dickson/Claire Wolfe, who were on their fourth match of the day. Matthews/Tiegs punched their ticket to Friday with a 21-13, 17-21, 16-14 win.
On the men’s side, Ty Loomis/Piotr Marciniak were the top seed, followed by Maddison McKibbin/Riley McKibbin. Both made it through to the main draw alongside No. 4 Mark Burik/Ian Satterfield and No. 6 Kyle Friend/Myles Muagututia. Each had to win three matches to make it through to Friday’s action.
Loomis/Marciniak were challenged. After besting No. 33 Rob McLean/Nathan Yang in straight sets (31-29, 21-17), the duo played a pair of tie break matches, with each decided in extra points. First up, No. 17 Dillon Lesniak/Garrett Wessberg pushed them to the brink 21-14, 20-22, 18-16, then it was No. 9 Brian Miller/Brett Ryan, who took the opening set before falling 19-21, 21-12, 17-15.
McKibbin/McKibbin also went to tiebreak in both of their final two matches, edging No. 18 Hagen Smith/Lucas Yoder (18-21, 21-19, 15-13) and No. 26 Michael Boag/Skylar del Sol (10-21, 22-20, 15-13).
Burik/Satterfield went the distance in their third match, holding on for a win over No. 28 Timothy Brewster/John Schwengel, who were on their fourth match of the day.
Friend/Muagututia played three-setters to bookend their day in New York. The pair edged past No. 38 Jacob Landel/Chicory Roth (21-14, 18-21, 15-10) in its opener and then overcame a 21-10 loss to rally past No. 3 Jeff Samuels/Ben Vaught (10-21, 21-19, 15-12).
