The top two teams in each pool after two days of round robin play will advance to the semi-finals of the CSCAA. On day 1, Florida State and South Carolina are both 2-0 in Pool A. In Pool B, 2nd-seeded LSU went 2-0, while Georgia State, UAB, and FAU each finished the day 1-1.

Pool A
- 1-seed Florida State def. 9-seed UNCW 5-0
- 1-seed Florida State def. 8-seed Tulane 5-0
- 4-seed South Carolina def. 5-seed FIU 3-2
- 4-seed South Carolina def. 9-seed UNCW 4-1
- 5-seed FIU def. 8-seed Tulane 4-1
The nationally 12th-ranked, conference 4th-seeded, South Carolina Gamecocks made the most headway on day 1 of the 2017 CSCAA Beach Volleyball Championship with wins over the surging FIU Panthers 3-2, plus a 4-1 win over UNCW.
#10 FIU, #14 FAU, and #9 Georgia State are among the teams that South Carolina is competing with for the 3rd automatic spot to the NCAA tournament in the east region, and all 3 of those teams went just 1-1 on Friday.
South Carolina junior Macie Tendrich, playing with Katie Zimmerman won her program-record 70th victory with a 2-0 day. She also tied her own program record with her 26th win of the season.
#1 Florida State took care of business against the two lowest-seeded teams in the pool. The big showdown will be on Saturday, where Florida State and South Carolina play in what will likely decide who gets the top seed out of the pool and gets to avoid LSU in the semi-finals.
Pool B
- 2-seed LSU def. 10-seed UAB 4-1
- 2-seed LSU def. 6-seed FAU 5-0
- 3-seed Georgia State def. 7-seed College of Charleston 4-1
- 6-seed FAU def. 3-seed Georgia State 3-2
- 10-seed UAB def. 7-seed College of Charleston 3-2
LSU, a presumed east region invite alongside Florida St., won its 21st and 22nd-straight matches by handling UAB and FAU. FAU win was sweet revenge for LSU: they beat LSU 3-2 on the first day of the season, part of an early-March struggle that the Tigers have recovered from.
Both of the Tigers’ victims, however, coupled those losses with big upsets to leave a deadlock for the pool’s second spot.
UAB upset College of Charleston 3-2, and FAU upset Georgia State 3-2. The latter of those results will have the biggest impact nationally, as Georgia State might have to upset LSU on Saturday to feel good about their invite to the NCAA Championships.
In its last 13 games, the LSU Tigers have outscored their opponents 59-6.
“We had a really good day today. Getting started this morning was a little challenging, but the teams played well. The afternoon was a great showing, and we definitely wanted to come out and play well against FAU,” said head coach Russell Brock.
“That loss at the beginning of the season (against FAU) was one that we really felt like we let slip away. It’s not often that you get an opportunity to play a team you lost to early on. I’m really proud of the team for getting a statement win.”
