The reports that have Cuban superstar Wilfredo Leon leaving Zenit Kazan at the end of the season to join Italy’s Sir Safety Perugia have put another international superstar on the spotlight: Ivan Zaytsev, the player that would most likely be influenced by Leon’s transfer, as they play the same position.
Zaytsev’s name is currently ruling transfer market rumors. Many Italian journalists have him staying in Perugia, or replacing Earvin Ngapeth on Modena, or signing in Verona. However, it appears that Revivre Milano is ahead of the pack. Here is what the team’s president Lucio Fusaro and team’s coach Andrea Giani had to say about the possibility of signing the Italian superstar, according to Ivolleymagazine.it:
“Ivan is the dream of any president. I think that his arrival in a city like Milan would be good for volleyball in general, it would be a more than perfect media shot, but at the moment it remains a dream. Such a ‘bomb’ involves very high costs. The first thing that comes to my mind is that we would have packed stands every Sunday, but such an operation requires planning. We must carefully evaluate the pros and cons.” – Lucio Fusaro
“I know Ivan very well and I know what I’m talking about. Getting a player like him would mean changing Revivre’s system, but I doubt it can be done in a few months. So, I keep my feet on the ground.” – Andrea Giani
Besides playing for Perugia, which currently leads Italy’s A1, Zaytsev has been a fixture for the Italian national team, helping the squad to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and more recently a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games.
