The Italian Volleyball Federation has announced in its official website its female roster for the 2018 Women’s FIVB World Championship, to be held in Japan from from September 29th to October 20th.

Here is what coach Davide Mazzanti had to say of his call up:

“My choices were made based on what I saw in the last tournaments. It’s a group that will allow me to adopt more solutions, depending on how the matches will go. The fourteen selected athletes will allow me to have many opportunities and also a good degree of adaptability in the different situations we will be in. In the last period some physical problems forced us to manage the girls very carefully so I could not always count on the whole team, however, that at this moment we have reached our peak physical shape as a team. Our is a young group, able to change the form of play: we start with a basic idea, but during the World Cup we could also change. We have not demoralized ourselves for the negative performance in the Gloria Cup, just as we are not going over our heads with our victory at the Montreux Masters. We know the things we can work on and improve.”

What stands out the most from the list is the sheer youth of Mazzanti’s squad. Fahr, Egonu, Pietrini, Nwakalor, Lubian are all  under 20 years of age, while Cambi, Danesi, Malinov, and Parrochiale are all under 22. Chirichella and Gennaro are the only returning players from the 2014 WCH roster.

Italy, which is ranked 7th in the world, will debut at the WCH on September 29 against Bulgaria. It will then go on to face off against Canada, Cuba, China, and Turkey.
