West Coast Conference Beach Player of the Year Sarah Sponcil is taking her game up the road from Loyola Marymount to Los Angeles, where she will play indoor and beach for UCLA.

“We are excited to welcome Sarah Sponcil to our Bruin beach volleyball family,” UCLA head coach Stein Metzger said in the Bruins’ announcement. “She comes with a lot of international experience at the highest level of competition. She will certainly bolster an already talented but young Bruin squad. She is an amazing player and an even better person and will be a great addition to the culture we have built here at UCLA.”

Sponcil, who went 20-9 this year at the No. 1 spot for the Lions, is a two-time AVCA Beach All-American. She posted a 44-16 all-time record at LMU including a 30-12 mark on Court 1. Sponcil went 26-7 as a rookie in 2015, including 12-3 on Line 1, and went on to compete at the AVCA National Pairs Championship with Betsi Metter.

Sponcil also was a member of the Team USA squad that competed at the Four Nations U21 tournament last spring, partnering with current UCLA freshman Torrey Van Winden, redshirting the 2016 collegiate beach season. The duo went 4-0 on Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia, earning a gold medal after defeating Brazil’s Victoria Tosta and Ana Ramos. Sponcil and Van Winden finished fourth at the FIVB U21 World Championships

Sponcil will be a senior on the hardwood and a junior on the beach.
