Michigan Set-Win Streak Ends at 32 as Team Moves to 11-0

Michigan def. Notre Dame 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19)

The Wolverines set-win streak ended at 32 after 10 straight sweeps and the first two sets of Sunday’s road match with the Fighting Irish, but the team bounced back to keep its match-win streak alive at 11-0. The 11-0 mark matches the program’s best start since 2011.

Key Stats

  • Michigan hit just .093 in the Set 3 loss, but managed to outhit the Fighting Irish for the match .208 to .205.
  • The Wolverines also outdid Notre Dame in kills (58-51) and aces (4-1). The Irish outblocked Michigan 9-8 and scored 26 points on Wolverine errors, while committing just 18 of their own.

Stat Leaders

  • Six Michigan players managed seven or more putaways in the match. Carly Skjodt led the way with a 13-kill, 16-dig double-double. Paige Jones added 12 kills and 11 saves, while Sydney Wetterstrom added 10 putaways.
  • MacKenzi Welsh turned in 46 assists, eight digs and seven kills for the Wolverines, while hitting .500 for the match. Kiara Shannon managed eight kills on a .500 clip, while putting up four blocks.
  •  Jemma Yeadon paced the Irish with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Charley Niego and Sydney Bent also notched double-doubles. Niego posted 13 kills and 14 digs, while Bent added 13 putaways and 12 digs.
  • Senior Ryann DeJarld notched 20 digs in the match to surpass the 2,000 dig milestone (2,003). She becomes the third active player with 2,000 saves alongside Courtney Pence (Illinois State) and Emily Butters (Missouri State), who boasted 2,257 and 2,063 entering the day.

How It Happened

  • Notre Dame led by as many as four early at 6-2 in Set 1 and boasted an 18-17 lead before succumbing to an 8-2 final push.
  • The Irish rallied from down five at 9-4 in Set 2 to take an 11-10 lead, and seized a one-point advantage at 22-21, but again ran out of gas as the Wolverines closed the set on a 4-1 run, including two Skjodt putaways and a final putdown by Welsh.
  • Notre Dame scored the first four points of Set 3 and never relinquished the lead. Michigan cut the margin to on at 11-10, but the Irish answered with a 9-4 run to put the set out of reach. Eleven errors (6 hitting miscues, 5 on the serve) plagued the Wolverines in the stanza. Yeadon and Bent turned in four kills apiece in the win.
  • The Irish grabbed an early 3-0 edge in Set 4 after two Michigan hitting errors began the stanza. The teams tied at 12 and Michigan gained its first lead at 15-14 after a block and a kill by Skjodt. After ties at 15 and 16, the Wolverines turned it on with nine of the final 12 points. Jones notched three kills and a solo block in the stretch, while Cori Crocker kept the team unbeaten with the final kill at 25-19.
