No. 33 Seeded Benesh/Fiers Lead AVP San Francisco Qualifiers

AVP San Francisco Open

Action began at the San Francisco Open on Thursday with 44 men’s teams and 38 women’s pairs vying for four spots per gender in the main draw.

The four men’s teams to qualify for the main draw were No. 33 Andy Benesh/Cole Fiers, No. 13 Hagen Smith/Lucas Yoder, No. 3 Branden Clemens/Ben Vaught and No. 2 Dave McKienzie/Jeff Samuels.

Benesh/Fiers upset top seeded Kyle Friend/Myles Muagututia in their first match (24-22, 21-17) and won in tie break against No. 16 Jordan Drake/Charles VanRees (21-10, 12-21, 15-12), before winning the lone straight set match in the qualifying finals (21-13, 21-13) over No. 24 Tom Kohler/Tony Pray.

Smith/Yoder upset No. 5 Duncan Budinger/Daniel Dalanhese 22-24, 21-17, 15-13, while McKienzie/Samuels rallied past No. 23 Kevin McColloch/Matt Motter (20-22, 21-12, 15-9). Clemens/Vaught rounded out its qualifying round by hanging out for the tiebreak win over No. 6 Spencer Sauter/David Vander Meer (21-16, 18-21, 17-15).

The four women’s teams to move on were No. 5 Mackenzie Ponnet/Kimberly Smith, No. 6 Agnieszka Pregowska/Corinne Quiggle, No. 8 Cassie House/Molly Turner and No. 10 Kimberly Hildreth/Sarah Schermerhorn.

Pregowska/Quiggle won three straight set matches to advance. The other teams had to fight through tiebreak matches in their final qualifying contests to move on.

House/Turner rallied past No. 1 seed Nicolette Martin/Allie Wheeler (17-21, 21-16, 16-14), while Hildreth/Schermerhorn came back after dropping their opening set against No. 2 Terese Cannon/Jace Pardon (19-21, 21-17, 16-14). Ponnet/Smith held on for a 21-14, 18-21, 15-12 win over No. 13 Sara Putt/Megan Rice.
