2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

After making the switch to beach volleyball at 32-years-old, Manon Nummerdor-Flier and partner Marleen Van Iersel of the Netherlands finally made a breakthrough this season by upsetting Chinese pair, Fan Wang/Yuan Yue in three.

The Dutch took the first set in extra points but faltered in a tough second set, with the Chinese forcing a third and deciding set. They jumped out to a 5-4 lead early, then went on to maintain a three point lead throughout the set to win 2-1, (22-20, 19-21, 15-12).

The Dutch pair mixed up their shots against the Chinese crew, working around their block forcing them to move on defense. Nummerdor-Flier served tough to the right back position, where Wang was receiving, with 100% of her serves going that direction. Van Iersel mixed up her serves just slightly, but for the most part went in the same direction, forcing Wang to pass.

The Chinese mixed up their shots on both serving and attacks but made a number of errors that gave them a low overall hitting percentage.

Though the Dutch pair defeated Yue/Wang, they still rank below them in the pool, coming in at third place in points.

Nummerdor-Flier/Van Iersel will take on Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Rebecca Perry on July 31.
