Renan Dal Zotto and his coaching staff decided on the 14 players who will represent Brazil at the Volleyball Nations League Final Round in Lille, France this week. The decision was made after the team’s training session on Friday, June 29th, and the team departed for France the next day.
All of the teams will essentially start from scratch with their previous records wiped clean. One thing that can not be wiped clean from the Preliminary Round at the injuries. Luis Felipe Fonteles will still not be in the lineup due to an elbow injury, but Maurício Souza has recovered from an abdominal injury suffered back in the 4th week. The former Olympian will probably not start, but he will be on the roster behind Isac Santos and Lucas Saatkamp. Isac and Lucas are 3rd and 4th respectively on the list of Brazil’s top scorers.
Souza is feeling optimistic about heading France for the Final Round. “I am very happy to be in the group again, being able to help our team at this important moment, which is the Final Stage. I’m feeling very good and eager to get there, play, help and, above all, feel the honor of wearing this shirt again from Brazil. As always, I will try to honor as best I can,” said Maurício Souza.
Bruno’s injury from Week 5 was not deemed serious enough to keep him out of this stage of the competition. Opposite of him will be Wallace De Souza. Wallace has been the leading scorer for Brazil throughout the Preliminary Round. He was the 2nd-best scorer heading into this week of play, and he has scored more points than any player still left in the tournament.
