Russia Hosts Its First Ever Snow Volleyball Cup

Snow Volleyball continues to pick up steam in Europe. This time, it was Russia’s turn to host its first ever Snow Volleyball Cup. In the city of Lipetsk, Petr Korolev and Anton Ermishenkov, the current national champions, finished in first place for the men, while Ksenia Dabizha and Liudmila Dayanova claimed the top honors in the women’s competition. Dayanova is also the reigning Russian national champion, as she won the title back in January along with Maria Ushkova. Ushkova and Dayanova will represent Russia at the first-ever CEV Snow Volleyball European Championship due to take place from March 23 to 25 in Wagrain-Kleinarl and Flachau, Austria.

As a testament to the new sport’s reach, one of the participants of the Cup was Dmitry Barsuk, a beach volleyball player who is an Olympian, a World Tour gold medalist (2008), and  a World Championship silver medalist (2007). Although he didn’t win, his participation should motivate more people to cross over from the beach and give snow volleyball a try, thus furthering displaying the new modality to more people.

Snow volleyball was recently an exhibition sport at the 2018 Winter Olympics. There is great hope from the FIVB that the new modality will receive full participation status in the next edition of the winter games.

18 февраля в Липецке завершился первый в истории Открытый Кубок России по волейболу на снегу. Победу в мужском турнире одержали Петр Королев и Антон Ермишенков, победители первого чемпионата России по волейболу на снегу в 2017 году. У женщин победу отпраздновали Ксения Дабижа и Людмила Даянова. Даянова – также действующая чемпионка России по волейболу на снегу. На недавнем турнире в Сестрорецке Даянова в паре с Марией Ушковой выиграла путевку на чемпионат Европы, который пройдет в марте в Австрии.
