The South American Championship started in Santiago and Temuco, Chile on Monday with eight teams playing between two pools. This tournament also acts as the first qualifying tournament for South American qualification for the 2018 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Championships in Italy and Bulgaria. The winning team will book their ticket for next years tournament.
In Pool A, Brazil (FIVB Ranking 1), Columbia (41), Paraguay (72) and Venezuela (22) are playing in Temuco, while in Pool B, Argentina (7), Chile (41) , Peru (137) and Uruguay (137) play in Santiago. The entire tournament will last five days, with semifinals on Thursday and the final on Friday.
It is expected that Brazil and Argentina will face off in the final due to their international strength. However, the matches still have to be played.
On Monday in Pool A, Venezuela jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Columbia. Columbia took the third set 25-22, and Venezuela outlasted Columbia 26-24 in the fourth set to take the match 3-1. Brazil dominated Paraguay 3-0, with the Paraguayans only scoring 28 points total in the match. As for Pool B, Argentina swept their neighbors Uruguay 3-0 and Chile also defeated Peru in straight sets.
For Tuesday’s matches, in Pool A, Columbia swept Paraguay 3-0, while Brazil jumped out early on Venezuela and never let up, winning 3-0. Brazil has advanced to the semifinals and with a set win against Columbia clinches 1st in the Pool. If Columbia loses, Venezuela would need to defeat Paraguay to advance to the semifinals. In Pool B, both matches were sweeps, Argentina over Peru 3-0 and Chile defeating Uruguay 3-0. Chile and Argentina have advanced to the semifinals, and both teams will face each other on Wednesday. The loser will probably face Brazil in the semifinals.
