Emma Villas Siena reached the ultimate goal of any team in the Italian Serie A2 in 2018. They hoisted the trophy and secured promotion to the top flight of Italian professional volleyball. Their work in the transfer market has shown they are not happy to just be participating in the Italian SuperLega, but have lofty goals of success. Just last week they signed Fernando Hernandez, a Cuban opposite who was one of the SuperLega’s most prolific scorers during his previous stint in Italy from 2015-2017, superstar Iranian setter Saeid Marouf, recognized as one of the best in the world at his position, and Japanese national teamer Yuri Ishikawa.

Emma Villas Siena has announced in its official website the signing of Ukrainian middle blocker Jurij Gladyr to its squad. After 9 years in Poland’s PlusLiga and a one season stint with Turkey’s Fenerbahce last season, this will be Gladyr’s first adventure in Italy. An experienced athlete, the soon to be 34-year-old has amassed many titles in his career and is coming off an exceptional season in Turkey, in which he was among the league’s leaders in attack efficiency and serving.
Here are his first words as a member of his new team:
“I am very motivated, both in coming to play in a league like the Italian A1 and in Siena. I made this choice because I share the project ambitions of this club. I will do my best to be able to excite the fans. I am well aware of the strength and prestige of the Italian championship and of the Italian teams, I have always followed it, on television and in streaming, so I am very happy to be part of it. I am currently training with the Ukrainian national team, I will be at the top of my shape for the start of the pre-season in August. I can not wait to start the season and get to know my teammates.”
