Team USA’s Garrett Muagututia Signs In Portugal

Sporting Clube de Portugal has announced in its official website the signing of Team USA’s Garrett Muagututia, who last played for Tianjin, of the Chinese Superleague. He also had stints in Poland, Italy, Turkey, Finland, and Spain. Here is what he had to say about the transfer:

I feel great about this change. I’m still trying to integrate myself well into the season and the country, but I chose Sporting CP without hesitation because the credentials of the club, which is notorious for soccer. Even though we never spoke, I already knew Luke Smith, Angel Dennis and La Bomba (Ivan Márquez). Have no doubt: I came to be a champion.

The 6’9″ tall, 29 year old Muagututia is from California and played college ball for UCLA (Class of 2010), where he earned Second Team AVCA All-America honors in his sophomore and senior years. For Team USA, he is a constant roster appearance, and most notably was part of the squad that participated in the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Poland. Recently, he played with Team USA in the USAV Cup.

In Sporting, Muagututia will be joining up with Cuban legend Angel Dennis, and Colombian opposite hitter Liberman Agamez, who was also just signed by the club. The team currently leads the Portuguese league with a 13-2 record.
